For The Film Experience, I took part in this week’s edition of “Hit Me With Your Best Shot” in which you pick your favorite shot from a chosen film. This edition covers Sam Raimi’s 2004 superhero sequel Spider-Man 2.
There js a lot to like about superhero imagery and responsibilities, but I want to focus on my favorite scene where Raimi gets to return to his horror roots.
Following a disastrous public example of his fusion device (and mechanical arms), Doctor Otto Octavious (Alfred Molina) is hospitalized as the surgeons attempt to remove his extra appendages. Still unconscious, the four arms rebel against the medical personnel in violent ways.
Raimi plays the scene as pure action horror and gives one of the doctors a chance at defending himself. Knocked to the ground, he triumphantly raises a small chainsaw, ready to fight. It’s ultimately an empty gesture.
I was tempted to include Doc Ock’s wail at the end of the scene, but it seemed to easy. My choice is my favorite shot from my favorite scene.
Spider-Man 2 is currently streaming in various places, but you’ll have to pony up a bit to rent it. Feel free to play along yourself here or using the hashtag #BestShot.
