For The Film Experience, I took part in this week’s edition of “Hit Me With Your Best Shot” in which you pick your favorite shot from a chosen film. This edition covers Steven Spielberg’s 2021 remake of West Side Story.

Full disclosure, I was not a big fan. I found the tone drab and more importantly, the color scheme equally as lifeless. Occasionally, the lifeless grays give way to vibrancy, and it caught my eye specifically during this shot. All relevant parties are coming together towards the climax, and the grey is suddenly replaced by a bright contrasting sunset, but with clouds on the horizon. It’s not subtle, but some of the best things about the film are when it forgoes subtlety.
