We are only three days away from the 93rd Academy Awards, so it is past time for me to deliver my 100% guaranteed successful Oscar winners. We will start and the top and go from there.
BEST PICTURE
You can not like it, you can try to fight it, but there is no way Nomadland doesn’t end up as the Best Picture winner. It has not lost an award all season and there is no reason to think it will stop now.
Will Win: Nomadland
Could Win: The Trial of the Chicago 7
Dark Horse: Minari
BEST DIRECTOR
The least-competitive category all night. Go ahead and engrave Zhao’s name now.
Will Win: Chloe Zhao, Nomadland
Could Win: none
Dark Horse: none
BEST ACTOR
Thanks to BAFTA and the performance of Hopkins, this race is a lot tighter than people have been expecting. If Hopkins won the BAFTA and wasn’t British, I would take it more seriously. As it stands, I still think Boseman will end up with the posthumous Oscar.
Will Win: Chadwick Boseman, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom
Could Win: Anthony Hopkins, The Father
Dark Horse: none
BEST ACTRESS
The only race that feels completely up in the air. My heart wants Mulligan, but my head says Davis. I won’t be disappointed either way. Even victory for McDormand or Andra Day wouldn’t shock me. Whoever wins will probably give a great speech.
Will Win: Viola Davis, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom
Could Win: Carey Mulligan, Promising Young Woman
Dark Horse: Frances McDormand, Nomadland
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
After Best Director, this is the most sewn up category in the bunch. Kaluuya has never faced a serious challenge from anyone all year and I don’t expect it now.
Will Win: Daniel Kaluuya, Judas and the Black Messiah
Could Win: None
Dark Horse: None
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
At one point, this race featured four women that could walk away with the gold, but Youn has firmed up her hold on the award with the SAG and BAFTA. Bakalova and Youn have dominated awards season and the voters finally giving Close her Oscar here would feel silly. This is Youn’s.
